Re: Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

I don't think it's a waste of time at all @Shaz51

Family history research takes dedication & effort.

A sense of history, & where we came from is helpful I think.

Unfortunately it's very hard to communicate that information to other people.

Without Dad here to explain it - I can't make much sense of the diagrams & names of ancestral trees.

Except vaguely.

Re: Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

We just assisted one of these regal creatures who had exhausted itself trying to get through a window in our carport. It even let Mr D stroke it's back before it flew off.

Trust the quiet afternoon refreshes you @Faith-and-Hope

Re: Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

My grandma once declared that there were no convicts in our family, promoting her daughter in law (my Aunty) on a search into our family history just to prove her wrong. She was proved wrong and we learnt some cool things from the research. Always thought it was funny a Australian woman with an Irish Catholic background declaring we had no convicts 😂

Re: Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

Having a convict past was thought of as being quite shameful in one era @Anna88, I think people now quite interested in finding out why a distant relative was sentenced to come to Aust.

Re: Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

I had my neighbour over for a cup of tea, ginger wine, cheese, olives, crackers, & hommus dips this afternoon.

We're still taking it in turns to invite each other over, every few months.

We both seem to have cat behaviour issues, so we talked about that too.

Evening Peoples. Been out most of the day- church, then a friend's place.

@PeppiPattyafter grocery shopping is a good cuppa time, but that's usually after our once every 2 weeks shopping trip, so that's a bit infrequent... 10 o'clock I'd be reluctant to do because he's self employed and usually getting into the swing of it by then. Bills are all on direct debit. Maybe we'll just have to set ourselves one morning a week as cuppa morning. Smiley Happy

I've been poking around the internet looking into family history as well, partially spurred on by my sister and I taking posession of the family photos and documents, now that our parents are in aged care. Having full names, dates of births, deaths and marriages goes some way towards finding info.

For years we've known that a famous 1700's composer was a cousin of one ancestor, and I found out recently that another cousin of another ancestor founded one of Australia's well known wineries. They're on Mum's side. I'm pretty sure there's no convict history there because they were from a European country, and basically they all married their fellow countrymen/women.

Dad's side, I haven't found any convict history either. The ancestors I've tracked down were Irish and English, but appear to have come out around about the time of the gold rush. We've heard that one great-grandfather came to Australia from America, but haven't been able to find confirming information. I have found some interesting photos of another set of great grandparents, one of which included our paternal grandfather when he was a 6 year old boy. He died when I was about five, but the memories I've got of him are pretty good, so that was a lovely discovery. It's on a genealogy site that I'm not yet signed up to, so I've only seen it as a thumbnail. When I think I've got enough information to make it worthwhile, I might sign up for 3 months worth of access and get a look at the proper full sized version.
