@Former-Member, we do have one of those string pull extension pole trimmers, but the string broke and we still need to replace it.
Wavy hedges that are meant to be that way are less visually disruptive than wavy hedges that are meant to be straight.
I avoid formal hedges here. But the plantings along our side boundary could be considered an untraditional "hedgerow" since there's a lot of edible shrubby things in it that are allowed to sort of tangle in to each other, plus some buddleias that were planted as a quick growing screen while the other things were still small. There's two bay trees (shrub sized), male and female Tassie Pepper plants, male and female pistachios, a feijoa, a smallish apple tree, a tamarillo in a large pot (which is probably only temporary- I doubt it will survive our frosts) and some red flowered japonica, white spiraea and wormwood.
The fruiting trees are still young-ish, so not yeilding much yet, but they are getting big enough now for me to start gradually trimming the buddleias into smaller bushes so that the other plants can take over.
